Performance management consultants are becoming more popular in today’s dental practices. Many offices need to find more efficient and economical ways to run their practice. Some may need to make personnel changes that can be easier coming from an outside recommendation. Sometimes doctors can get attached to staff members and feel guilty if they need to make changes. They can take that pressure off of themselves and put it on the consultant.

Some facilities might need just a simple change in how to get their schedules full to doing a complete overhaul of the practice. They can come in and teach the office manager how to run audit reports to where changes can be made. They can recommend behavior changes on employees you are not ready to let go of. If a full change is needed for the practice, they can sit down with you and your staff members in a meeting to go over non confidential ideas.

With out an outside consultant, you can get input on who are your most efficient employees and finding those who are costing your practice money and time. The employee might be well liked, but it does come down to the practice being profitable. The consultant might recommend some behavior changes for the employee versus letting them go right away. You might also need to get new staff members. The outside consultant can recommend companies to bring in working interviews and have you work with someone prior to hiring them on to see how it works out.

There are many companies out there now in this field. You might want to choose someone who has actually worked in the dental field and has that personal knowledge versus someone that just has a degree in practice management. It is easier to respect and take the word of someone who knows what is actually involved in the practice.

When you have found someone to meet with, the first visit is usually very casual and away from the practice. They will usually then come into the practice on a day no staff is there to run audit reports and go over all practice numbers and information. They then might set up to come in on a day with staff and evaluate who everyone performs together.

You can choose whether to get a one time analysis done of your office and make those changes or some doctors choose to pay a monthly fee and have a practice consultant at their disposal at all times. If you are shaky on business practices, this can be a great option. Perhaps the best bet is to focus on specific improvements, rather than a complete approach to the entire practice. Making wholesale changes to everything usually has poor results.

Fees can be very expensive with consultants. Some doctors will get the services on a trial basis of a few months to see if their services are beneficial to their practice and to see if it is worthy to bring them on a monthly visit. Always verify all prices and go over any questions prior to signing any contracts.

Always verify the performance management consultants you will bring in. Check degrees and ask other practices what they did for them and if it improved their facilities. Experience is always important and it usually works out best if someone has actually worked in the field they are making recommendations on.
