Myths have always chased hypnosis and its healing arm, hypnotherapy. Some regard them to be black magic whereas others reject them as pseudo science. Some of the popular myths linked with hypnosis and the truth behind them are discussed here.

There is no mysticism or rituals involved in hypnosis. It hinges more on the science of the human mind and is very simple to practice for anyone who is willing to learn it. The authenticity of hypnosis is doubted even by people who have seen it working on subjects. They hold that those who can be hypnotized are somehow weak mentally. But this again is a complete fallacy. Hypnosis can be done on anyone regardless of his or her levels of will power.

Another belief is that hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness, which again is a serious misconception. A person under hypnosis does not get segregated from the outside world, but stays completely aware of the happenings around him. During the hypnotic state, the subject calms down entirely and is hence able to focus fully on the inputs provided by the practitioner.

Some scientific discoveries have stated that only about 5% of the population is capable of being hypnotized, which is the third myth on this list. Researchers have come up with this low result because they have used the identical hypnosis procedure on all people without considering their individual natures. People differ in their natures and personalities, and thus there have to be different hypnosis techniques to suit the temperaments of different individuals.

Meditation and hypnosis are often thought to be the same by people. But while hypnosis is a communication technique, meditation is all about a state of mind and normally has nothing to do with communication. The state of trance is not a hypnotic state either. Just like meditation, trance is a mental state, and it is not associated with communication in any manner, whereas the very basis of the hypnosis technique is communication.

Another myth is that physical and behavioural alterations in an individual are not possible through hypnosis training or hypnotherapy. Hypnosis certainly cannot alter the body in unnatural ways. However, it can propel the body to a healthy shape through behavioural transformations like eating less, and quitting smoking and other addictions by ensuring a good amount of of motivation in a person.

If an individual falls for all the wrong notions that exist regarding hypnotherapy and doesn’t go for a hypnotic session, then he will himself burn the bridge to a happier and healthier life.
