I have never been ashamed to declare that I’m, and always have been, a fair-weather angler. And especially since I have not been fishing in a very long time, having got the bug to start again there was no possibility I was going to go out for an experimental trip when I would have wanted to wrap up like Ernest Shackleton and put off myself forever. Also, I wouldn’t have wanted to spend much money on bait and tackle if I was not definite that I was going to make a good effort of it first.

It would make sense for me to head out to the lakeside with a pal, go halves on bait and tackle and I hope be permitted to use a guest pass before I splash out on joining the Birmingham Angling Association which is what is needed to be qualified to go fishing on the towpaths around here, as well as the rod licence that I will want from the Department of Environment. The 2 of those will be the fretful side of 50 before anything else, so I want to be sure that I will still be able to enjoy it.

One thing I am going to enjoy is dawdling in bait and tackle outlets. I adore little, independent, specialist shops who have the local knowledge, who can help intelligently from first hand knowledge and be the best source of news about fishing in the district regarding what is being caught and where.

So, if it is true that Spring is almost upon us (and it is a super bright day today too) then I want to do what I have been promising myself for ages, sort out a trip with my mate, get to the angling shop and go angling.

In fact, if ever I had to buy fresh kit to go angling with, I had to go into Guildford which was a thirty minute bus ride each way (and expensive to a boy on limited pocket money who was not allowed a paper round) go to the specialist sports shop on the high street. Of course there was the bonus that you could get a few pints of maggots while there to take angling when I got home, and there was the opportunity of recouping some of the cost by selling a few handfuls to friends at the waterside who all suffered the identical challenge. But of course, even with an early start, it would be highly doubtful that it would be possible to get down to the lakes much before the early afternoon, which meant that daylight would be limited and you very often just ended up throwing the precious bait into the water as you packed away. The consequences of them dying and reeking out the downstairs would have been dire.

It would have been fabulous growing up where I live these days. Here, there are a number of good shops for fishing tackle close by, certainly only a short bike ride, there are loads of canals and lakes to fish and for an special day out, the River Severn is local enough to get to in a fairly short time with the bonus that if you go to the right place you can be angling and observe the steam trains on the Severn Valley Railway chuffing up and down the line between Bridgnorth and Kidderminster.

But even if I was back in Cranleigh, the internet would mean that I could buy any fishing tackle I desired and have it delivered, and I have come across a website that will dispatch all kinds of live-bait including maggots in what I would expect would be very reliable packaging. I cannot imagine the Royal Mail being too pleased at boxes of maggots bursting and spilling all over the insides of mailbags and people’s parcels! So feeling good about one’s fishing tackle before starting out for a day’s fishing would be easy and somebody would feel like a proper fisherman under those circumstances.

This is all fine and dandy. I feel pleased that when I do begin angling again in the next few weeks, I will be able to get all I need with little hardship from a local retailer which wasn’t an option I had as a teenager, but if I was at that age again, it’s excellent to know that if I wanted, I could now get all the fishing tackle I couldn’t have then. Anything that makes access to the things you do more straightforward has to be a good thing.

What with the present Mrs Izzard going back to work following an extended sick leave due to breast cancer treatment since April in 2 weeks, and the prospect of the weather becoming milder through February and March, the lure of the canal towpath will probably be overwhelming now that I have made the decision to update the fishing tackle and begin fishing again.

When I was going through my fishing tackle the other day, I found an old rod licence which was dated 1994, which most likely was the previous time I went fishing. It feels a really long time and yet I remember it clearly, a clear day in June when I went for a day’s angling on the Thames at Walton, and I snagged my only ever barbel. This may seem weird, but much of the fishing I did as a youth was on a little lake in Cranleigh where I grew up, and barbel are a river fish.

In those days, I didn’t have a a lot of fishing tackle as I didn’t have a lot of money and yet I still have a lot of of it from those days. I find it staggering that even when I did earn plenty of money, I never really thought about angling or spending some money and buying some really top fishing tackle and using up more time by the water.

When I do resume, I will need to shell out some change\money, the priority is getting a rod licence and becoming a member of the Birmingham Anglers Association who control fishing on the canals in the area here, then I will need some modern fishing tackle as mine is ancient and possibly illegal now, especially the hooks which all seem to have barbs which I am fairly sure are not permitted now.

I cannot wait to go back, though I’m not embarrassed to say that I was always and certainly will be now, a very fair weather fisherman, so I will need dry, warm conditions. It doesn’t have to be clear, just not wet and cold and if it’s a Friday after the present Mrs Izzard has returned to work (and I’m legal) then the probability is I’m going to go angling. Brilliant.

Angling is a chance for anyone to be able to spend some quality time by oneself, contemplate where life is taking one and what can be amended, what is going nicely and what isn’t. One has so few openings to be alone and I really believe that could be a reason for a build up of unwanted stress. For instance, I work at home, my wife has also been at home on long term sick leave after being diagnosed with breast cancer in April 2010. The best thing is that as I am at home, I have been able to be there for her, transport and be with her when she’s been having chemo and radiotherapy and then following that when she’s been getting the after effects I can look after our son.

However, the flipside was that, particularly during the radiotherapy, which was every weekday, I couldn’t get on to doing any work. After the journey to the hospital and back, which was at least a ninety minute exercise, then driving Will to school, having a bit of lunch, getting Will again and coming home, there was barely a period of an hour or more until late in the day when I could actually settle into doing anything which obviously meant that any thought of getting the fishing tackle out of the garage and doing a bit of angling was all but impossible. This pushes my stress levels considerably, with little prospect of taking a decent break.

What is occurring now is that things are settling down. Chemo and radiotherapy is done, and my wife is looking to head back to work on January 17th which is very exciting. She will have to have an intravenous herceptin treatment every three weeks but there are no vile side effects from that. So, as she will be picking up Will from school on her way home every day, it appears that if I wanted to, I could pinch a few hours of an afternoon doing some fishing at one of the nearby canals. I do have to get some new fishing tackle before I can do anything, as well as get a rod licence and become a member the Birmingham Angling Association to be allowed to fish the canals, but hopefully I can get everything done by the time she goes back to work.

Whether I can spend an afternoon angling of course, will be dependant on work and if I can do enough done in the mornings to be able to leave it and swap the laptop for the fishing tackle. Perhaps Friday afternoons will be the easiest to justify, but at least as I work for myself then I will know if I really can afford to bunk off.
