The American Art Therapy Association (http://www.americanarttherapyassociation.org/) is another excellent resource. Their response to defining what is art therapy follows:

“Art therapy is the therapeutic use of art making, within a professional relationship, by people who experience illness, trauma or challenges in living, and by people who seek personal development. Through creating art and reflecting on the art products and processes, people can increase awareness of self and others cope with symptoms, stress and traumatic experiences; enhance cognitive abilities; and enjoy the life-affirming pleasures of making art.”

Art therapy is strong in the U.S. There are over 40 graduate programs in the U.S. It is less strong but officially exists with advanced professional training in Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand and several other countries.

Overseas, in mainland China and India, for example, along with most other countries, the situation is very different. There is very little art therapy education available. The populations of those countries suffer for lack of trained art therapists. There is such a lack of information about the benefits of art therapy, that even educated, trained psychotherapists in those countries are frequently not aware of the benefits to their clients and populations that are being missed. They may not even be aware there is such a discipline as art therapy.

Art therapy includes and goes beyond what traditional verbal therapy provides. In the U.S. and elsewhere, art therapists go through intense graduate level training to provide the value of creative art therapy. They must graduate from accredited graduate level programs and many attain board certification.

Truly international communication and sharing of ideas can be provided through the internet. We have seen the rise of social media such as twitter, facebook, blogs and more. Wikipedia provides growing online information bases.

Now for the first time an online forum and wiki are being created for art therapists, art therapy students and others interested in this profession.

The Art Therapy Forum and What is Art Therapy websites have joined to create an online forum for communication between art therapists, others interested in promoting art therapy, and art therapy associations around the world.

The online internet art therapy forum will now begin to provide a way for art therapists to communicate easily and share knowledge about what is art therapy.

In addition, a wiki, (a wiki is an online encyclopedia of knowledge) will be built that will allow committed art therapists to share their knowledge about what is art therapy with other art therapists in parts of the world where this knowledge is not available. An online encyclopedia of art therapy will have numerous advantages and provide comprehensive knowledge.

Art therapists around the world will be able to communicate easily and share knowledge so art therapy can grow and provide benefit to millions of people internationally.
