The savannah cat’s history starts during the early 1980′s when Judy Frank bred an African Serval to a domestic shorthair cat. The mating by Judy Frank produced one female savannah cat, this female savannah cat was afterwards named Savannah, she continued to produce other female savannah cat kittens to ascertain the Savannah cat breed.

Other breeders, soon to be savannah cat, were impressed with the unique exotic looks, friendly tempermant and outgoing temperament of the Savannah cat breed and went on to begin their own breeding programs. These breeding programs are what set the foundation for every generation of savannah cat you see alive today. It was a very diffuclut begining and many did not expect the breed to become what it is today.

Further on in history, in 1996, savannah cat breeders submitted an application to have the Savannah registered with The International Cat Association ( TICA) but the TICA board had placed a moratorium on accepting any new breeds. It was not until the year 2000 that the Savannah was accepted for registration.

Now Bengal cat can be registered with The International Cat Association (TICA). In 2002, the Savannah was unanimously accepted into show status and was shown in May of that year. Forward to 2010 and votes are being collected to submit the savannah cat for champion status in TICA. When this happens only “SBT” savannah cat can be show at TICA cat shows.

These “SBT” savannah cats are considered purbred cats of the savannah cat breed because they have three generations of savannah to savananh breedings. The popularity of the Savannah breed continues to develop and grow in monumental proportions.

Are you wondering what generation of Savannah cat is right for you?

F1 Savannah Cats

F1 Savannah range in size from 12 to 26 pounds. F1 Savannahs can be any where from 50% to 82% or more wild blood. The higher the percentage, the higher the chance of wild tenancies. They need a larger litter box such as a tub. Dislike being held. Much like a serval they chose one person to bond with. They get along great with other animals but they disike being held. Will play fetch, give headbutts and walk on a leash with training.

F2 savannah cats

F2 Savannahs range from 16 to 25 pounds. F2 Savannah cats get along great with other animals. Bond closely with their owners. They love to be pet. Most F2s out of a proper breeding program have about the same size of an F1. F2 Savannahs will have less wild tendencies. Will play fetch, give headbutts and walk on a leash with training.

F3 Savannah cats

F3 Savannahs will enjoy they whole family. They get along great with other animals. Most love being scratched, although some don’t care for long periods of being in a lap. Wild tendencies such as spray do not occur often at this level, remembering to fix your cat is the main factor behind those behaviors. Will play fetch, give headbutts and walk on a leash with training. F3 savannahs are similar in behavior to a F2 savannah cat breeder but are very reliable with children.

F4 – F8 Savannah cats

F4 – F7 Savannahs enjoy they whole family, they are friendly and very hand on. They still retain the wonderful traits of the savannah breed such as loving water, chirping, walking in a leash and playing fetch but with out the wild tenancies. It may surprise you how large a savannah will be at this generation! If you have smaller children these generations are the most recommended for your family. Will play fetch, give headbutts and walk on a leash with training.

My option as a breeder who owns every generations is that F3 savannah cat make the best pet the majority of people. F3 Savannah cats are easy to manage. Not to big and not to small. Once they get older they still love their family with all their fuzzy hearts. They are smart, quick to learn and if from the right breeding just as gorgeous as higher generations. If you are on a strict low budget then I suggest a F5 or lower since they will be lower in price but still spotted with the savannah cat quirks such as fetching with that lovably dog like personality.

If your stuck between figuring out the differences between a bengal cat, chausie and Savannah cat. The biggest differences from other breeds is savannah cats are energetic, normally being up all day long. They love to play, talk to you, follow you around. A savannah cats build is very sleek and elegant.

My husband is not a cat person but his opinion has always been savannah cats are dogs stuck in cat bodies. He gets a real kick out of the cats fetching their toys ready for play or when they sit straight up and hold an object to study it like a raccoon. But most of all he never knew that a cat of any breed could be so loyal. Every cat he ever meet was “stuck up” or “catty” but savannah cats are so well rounded. I hoped this helps you find your perfect feline.

You will love the comments your friends give you as they look at the many photos of your pets around the home. These photo’s serve another means though when it comes to insurance, an accident or if your pet goes missing they provide you with a picture for your posters if you put some up in your area or on our Lost Pets Register.

Taking snaps of your cat can be a tricky task especially as they are fast and can be unpredictable, after all cats will be cats so don’t be expecting them for help. If you want a good picture you must remember the most important factors are having time, patience and preparation.

Ideally when starting off to not use a flash, rely on natural lighting as much as possible. If you have to use a flash then a fill flash would be recommended. The flash from point and shoot camera’s will be directed straight at the cat, resulting in some rather unflattering and unnatural poses and you run the risk of getting red eye or the cat’s reflective eyes in the shot.

Nearly everyone these days has a digital camera, if you do then set you camera to its automatic settings (action or sports mode if it has one of them), the automatic setting will set the aperture and shutter speed for you. Remember though, let the camera do the work, you just focus on the picture.

Select a background which is as plain as possible, something like grass or a patio or a plain carpet in your house. Make sure it’s in an area that has plenty of natural lighting and is as uncluttered as possible otherwise well into the background so it’s out of focus.

To start taking pictures it is best to get down to their level which may require you laying on the ground, try not to take pictures from too far above your cat as this will give a less natural look to your cat. If you have a telephoto lens this will enable you to stay in one place and still obtain close up shoots. Recognize that most cats will simply come toward you and rub against you which means they will be to close for a good shot so when you raise a camera to take a picture of them act like you are not interested in them.

Also remember to keep as quiet as possible and make sure no one else is around to distract them. You need to wait until your cat is either focused on something else or is tired and let your cat relax and do whatever he does naturally. It may take 10 minutes, or it may take an hour but if you are patient they will relax and look very natural, now take as many pictures as possible. If he does something cute, slowly focus the camera and take the shot but do not make any quick moves.

Take as many photos’ as you can. If you have a digital camera there’s no reason not to take hundreds over a few. You never know which ones you’ll use and the odds are in your favour the more photos’ you have.

There you have it, it’s no great secret. The trick is to be quiet, have patience and a lot of spare time. Don’t expect to be able to grab the pictures in ten minutes because that’s very unlikely. Set aside a morning or afternoon and remember the simple tips and then you may just get those extra special pictures of your cat.

If you want something a little different like your cat drinking from the tap or along those lines then keep your camera near the sink and batteries charged and then when they do go to drink you will be all set to snap away. Photos like these may take a little extra planning and time but they can give you that little extra special picture of your cat.

Cats are notoriously finicky creatures and when living together under the same roof, cat behavior problems in the home can become a major issue. In this article, I will discuss a couple of ways you can address these issues and bring some peace and normality back to your home.

The very first thing you need to address when you have multiple cats is the litter box situation. Most people think one litter box is enough even if they have several cats.

This couldn’t be further from the truth.

You need to have at least one more litter box than you have cats.

I know that might seem like a lot, especially if you have more than a couple of cats but it is an absolute necessity. Cats are extraordinarily clean creatures and having to share a litter box with other cats in your home is not going to make them happy.

Your cat will likely abandon the litter box as a protest and end up peeing on your bed or carpet. Then the issue gets even worse because the other cats will be attracted to the smell of pee and go in the same spot.

Stop this classic cat behavior problem from happening in the first place by having enough litter boxes.

The other factor that you need to know about is stress. Although cats are essentially solitary creatures, they need attention and affection as well. The difference is that cats decide when and where to get this attention.

If they are having to compete for your attention with other cats in your home, they are likely to get jealous and start protesting with their bladder. Set aside time every single day for each every one of your cats and make sure none of them are being neglected.

My wife and I had a serious problem with one of our cats a few months ago when one of them decided that the corner of our living room was a better place to pee than his litter box. It cost us thousands of dollars in repairs to both our floor AND the ceiling of our neighbor below us.

We took to the internet looking for solutions to stop our cat peeing everywhere on the web and didn’t find the right answers.

We spent the next several months compiling all the most relevant information and also interviewing veterinarians in our area and around the world.

The results of our research can now be found at StopCatPeeing.com where we have many articles relating to cat behavior problems and how to stop a cat peeing everywhere for good.
